I recently came across a fun quiz that got me looking at views of Australia’s vast deserts over the past couple days (link below if interested). These images show just three of hundreds of ephemeral salt lakes scattered around the west and north of Australia. Only after monsoon rains do they fill, and only rarely do they hold water for longer than several months over the span of decades.
