This is a portion of the Yukon Delta, which itself is part of the massive Yukon-Kuskokwim mega delta and location of the terminus of the 2000 mile long Yukon River in Alaska. Combined, this delta region is larger than the state of Louisiana, with low lying tundra allowing for constant landscape changes that keep this area highly remote and inaccessible.
To get a true sense of size, view the above image at full screen and search for the three active airstrips located within the delta fan. These runways belong to Alakanuk, Emmonak and Kotlick, small towns that, similar to most places in Alaska, are only accessible by aircraft in the summer, while winter offers the opportunity to use the frozen river as a network of roads.
The region is protected as a National Wildlife Refuge. More views of the delta below.
